A grotto is a natural or artificial cave used by humans in modern times and antiquity. Today, they are often used as shrines in which to place statues of saints, particularly the Virgin Mary. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes stood in the southwest corner of the grounds of St Patrick’s Church.

Time to move forward for the Church

Just last Friday Kilkenny made history when the Church of Ireland installed the first ever female Dean of Ossory at St Canice’s Cathedral. The Very Rev Katharine Poulton now holds the prestigious position and resides here in Kilkenny at the deanery. It was a big day for the COI community and the ceremony was fittingly prestigious.

Suffer the little children

I was educated in a diocesan seminary during the 1980s. I was lucky to have been taught by some priests who were amongst the most dedicated and competent teaching personnel in the country. These people were above reproach of any kind and were and are a credit to their professions. Their colleagues and their superiors have failed these priests and many more like them. Their legacy has been tarnished by a systemic cover-up of crimes of such magnitude that they are the subject of scrutiny and comment all over the world.
